Ever since the iPad was released in 2010, people have wondered, "Why do I need a tablet?" There are several reasons, and several uses for tablets that make them a surprisingly invaluable part of everyday life.
There had been tablets before iPad started the craze, but the Apple product showed exactly what a tablet could do. Among the main reasons why tablets are now so vital to users and businesses alike are that they are disposable (stay with us on this), offer more visual real estate, and are even more portable than a laptop.
It's disposable (keep reading):
In an effort to make everything more mobile, many people tote their life's work around with a laptop, and laptops are great. But there are a few problems: mainly, they're expensive. This means, in most cases, that you'll own just one computer, the laptop. If something happens to said laptop, all of your data will be gone. A tablet is inexpensive enough to allow the purchase of a desktop computer, and it will provide a better experience. See, desktops are cheaper than laptops, and are more powerful and offer more storage space for the money. Plus your data will be much more secure because it's stationary, and the parts are generally built a little better. For a mobile alternative to a laptop, a tablet (and it doesn't need to be an iPad; consider cheaper tablets such as the Galaxy Tab) allows you to take your digital information from your PC to work, the coffeeshop or your friend's house, even featuring convenient blue tooth keyboard options. You can still conduct business presentations, take class notes, and surf the web at a coffeeshop, but if someone makes off with your backpack, you're only out a day of productivity and a few hundred bucks, instead of your life's work and $1,000, or more.
It has a bigger screen (and that's important):
Many people think that having a bigger screen is a moot point, and even one that can hinder the selling point. Nothing is further from the truth. Watching a movie on your smartphone may be a fun gimmick, but watching a movie on a tablet is actually an enjoyable experience. Instead of reading news articles after tapping a few icons, entire newspaper pages rest comfortably on your tablet. Games are large and expansive, too. Playing Angry Birds to get that perfect score is made infinitely better on a 10-inch screen. Apps in general just feel a lot better on the bigger screen. The saying "go big or go home" definitely applies to tablets.
It's portable (way more):
When you're at home, having that crucial debate about a football game in 1985, a tablet is a great way to look it up. They are also important when you need to show friends that hilarious YouTube video (see, "bigger screen" argument). Tablets are so sleek (and chic), they make going all the way to the study to pick up, unplug and lug the laptop over seem like something out of the Flintstones. And forgot about disrupting your friends by asking them to the media room to have the stationary PC settle your discussion over the words to the "Super Bowl Shuffle." Just whip out a tablet! It's big enough to share, and internet ready for finding up that video before you forget about it.
